Charles D. "Chuck" Loftus

Charles D. "Chuck" Loftus, 91, former long time resident of Galt CA, recent resident of Covington, OH, left this world early Sunday morning, July 21, 2013, at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. One day short of his 92nd birthday.

Chuck was born July 22, 1921 to Walter J. and Evalyn (Montague) Loftus, in Riceville, Iowa. Chuck was one of 14 children.

At a young age he had joined and proudly served in the United States Navy for 21 years, from 1940-1961. He served during WWII and the Korean War. The majority of his time was spent on the USS Mississippi, along with several other Navy vessels. Seeing action in the Aleutian Islands, Gilbert Islands, Atoll Island, New Ireland Islands, as well as time spent in the waters and on shore at China, Japan, Philippines, Korea, Iceland, Newfoundland, and Hawaii. For his military services he was awarded numerous medals. Including the following: American Defense Service Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area, China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.

Chuck married Donna M. Shannon in 1950. They moved to Lodi, CA from Iowa in 1962 after retiring from his service in the Navy. Chuck had worked for a cannery in Lodi as well as Claude C. Woods, helping in the construction of Camanche Dam, before starting work for the City of Lodi where he had worked for 17 years retiring in 1982.

He was a friend to Bill W. for 28 years.

He is survived by his children, Russel Loftus of Planview, MN, Ron (Blair) Loftus of Montague, CA, Beverly DeVol of Woodbridge, CA, and Jane (Jim) Dickey of Covington, OH; 9 grandchildren, Heather (Tom) Millard, Erin (Cory) Henry, Robert Loftus, Scott (Mandy) Loftus, Shannon Loftus, Donovan (Michelle) DeVol, Sarah (Ross) Carollo, Ryan Swinney, and Tyler Swinney; 11 great grandchildren, Nikole, Blake and Abi (DeVol), Rachel and Zachary (Loftus), Makena and Malia (Millard), Rosario, Anthony and Cora (Carollo), and Corbin (Henry); sister, Ada Hildenbrand of Oxnard, CA; brother, Bill Loftus of Waseca, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 11 brothers, Norbert, Bob, Gay, Tom, Bernard, Vincent, Frances, Lloyd, Harold, Jim and Raymond (Jack).

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Lodi Funeral Home, Lodi, CA. Burial will follow in the Lodi Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville, Ohio.
