James C. Herbert, 72, passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2009 at Wayne Hospital in Greenville, Ohio. Jim was born October 30th 1936 in Richmond, Indiana to the late Carroll and Mary Catherine (Sowers) Herbert,
After graduating from New Madison High School in 1955 Jim served in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1962. He worked at the Dana Corporation Sleeve Casting plant for 38 years. During his employment he became a charter member of the Local 1363 United Auto Workers serving as its first President. Jim also attended Eastern Indiana Center at Earlham College in Richmond. Jim attended the Religious Society of Friends.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years Marilyn Jean (Retz), children Jacquelyn Gates (Greg), Michael Herbert and Susan Gulliford (John); seven grandchildren; Janelle Metzger of Vandelia, Ohio, Joshua Pyle of Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, Caroline Pyle of Richmond, Indiana, Matthew and Shannon Herbert of Dayton, Ohio, Paul and Emily Gulliford of Schaumburg, IL; two brothers, William Dale of Greenville and Larry Dale of Sydney, Ohio.
In addition to his parents Jim is preceded in death by his sisters Phyllis Herbert, Peggy and Susie Dale and a brother Terry Dale (Marty)
Jim loved his family, was an expert gardener and opened his home to many cats.
Visitation for Jim will be from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Storch Braund Funeral Home in New Madison. Funeral Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 also at the funeral home.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Tri Village Rescue Squad or the New Madison Fire Department.
