Richard W. Carpenter, 75, of Greenville, OH passed away Saturday morning, march 28, 2009 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. He was born October 3, 1933 in Nashville, TN, son of the late William F. and Vivian (Woodrow) Carpenter. Dick attended Vanderbilt University and received a B.A. in political science in 1955. Upon graduation he served as an officer in the US Navy from 1955-1958. After leaving the Navy, he attended medical school at Vanderbilt, graduating in 1962. He married Judith Troyer of Indianapolis in 1962, and eventually settled in Morehead, KY where he founded the Morehead Clinic in 1971. He started the first cardiac-rehab program in Morehead. Dick practiced internal medicine in Morehead for 25 years, before moving to Maryland in 1992. He resided in Maryland and practiced addiction medicine there until 2007, when he moved to Greenville to be closer to his family as his health declined. He was currently attending the Oakland Church of the Brethren and was a longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He enjoyed woodworking, sailing, and spending time with his grandchildren. Dick is survived by four children, Wendy Carpenter (husband Courtney Hess) of Modoc, IN; Rachel Carpenter (husband John Zakelj) of Modoc, IN; Chris Carpenter (wife Eun Jung Kim) of Incheon, South Korea; and Sam Carpenter (wife Alison Schumacher) of Indianapolis, IN; six grandchildren, Jordan and Adrian Hess, Anna, Ian and Ruth Zakelj, Eun Ji Katherine Carpenter; and two brothers, William F. Carpenter, Jr. and John A. Carpenter both of Nashville, TN. The family will receive friends at the Brethren Retirement Community, 750 Chestnut St., Greenville, OH, Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Brethren Retirement Community, Resident's Aid Fund, 750 Chestnut St., Greenville, OH 45331. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville.
