Barry “Tank” Tankersley, age 63, of New Paris, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana.
He was born on April 24, 1962, in Bunker Hill, Indiana, to the late Ronald Tankersley and Wanda (Daugherty) Christison.
In addition to his father and mother, Barry was preceded in death by his stepfather, Garey Christison.
Barry is survived by his children, Matthew (Jessica) Tankersley of Eaton, Ohio, and Effie (Roger) Neff of Arcanum; his grandchildren, Roger Neff, Jr., Dresden Tankersley, Max Moser, Saige Neff, Hadleigh Tankersley, Benjamin Neff, Violet Davis, and Penny Tankersley; the mother of his children, Carla Barnett of Eaton; and his siblings, Scot (Connie) Tankersley of Standford, Kentucky, and Wendy Tankersley of Destin Florida.
Barry attended Boyle County High School in Kentucky. On February 26, 1980, he enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a distinguished 20-year military career that ended in his retirement in 2000 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Throughout those years, Barry served with honor, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to his country.
As a Master Gunner, the Army’s technical expert on the weapons systems of the M1 Abrams main battle tank, Barry was regarded as one of the very best. He was a highly skilled tanker, a respected leader, and a trusted mentor who trained and influenced countless soldiers. His knowledge, discipline, and commitment to excellence left a lasting mark on all who served alongside him.
Even in retirement from active duty, Barry’s dedication to his country did not end. He contributed his expertise to the development of weapons systems for the United States military. In 2001, he returned to Fort Knox, where he accepted a civilian position overseeing the training school for newly enlisted soldiers. There, he continued shaping the next generation of service members until 2015, when he officially concluded his service to the nation and began enjoying a well-earned retirement.
When not in uniform, Barry embraced life with the same passion and energy he brought to his military career. He enjoyed golfing, spending time at local diners for good food and fellowship and giving just about anyone a hard time. Known for his quick wit and infectious sense of humor, Barry could spark a story, share a joke, and turn any gathering into a good time. He brought laughter and light even in the toughest moments.
Above all, Barry cherished his family. He loved attending his grandchildren’s activities, especially their sporting events and music performances. His presence, humor, and steadfast love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
