March 29, 1922 — June 8, 1944

Emblem

Harley Edwin Alexander will be laid to rest Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Greenmound Cemetery, New Madison, Ohio.

Coxswain Alexander was listed as Missing in Action after his ship, the USS Glennon struck a mine in the English Channel June 8, 1944.  Through the unending efforts of THE DEFENSE POW/MIA ACCOUNTING AGENCY and the miracle of DNA science, we are finally able to bring our beloved uncle home to rest alongside his family.

Harley Edwin Alexander was born on the family farm outside New Madison on March 29, 1922 to Wilbur Harmon Alexander and Ina Mae (Harrison) Alexander.   He grew up on the farm and graduated from New Madison High School before joining the Navy on August 4, 1942, at the age of 20, and served onboard the destroyer USS Glennon during World War II.

Harley was survived by his fiancée Doris Goodyear, his mother, and his siblings.   He had nine older siblings: sisters Esther (Alexander) Daugherty, Helen (Alexander) Glunt, and Hazel (Alexander) Blue; and brothers Ellis, Fred, James, Herb, Harold, and Lloyd Alexander.  He had four younger siblings: sister Mary Alice (Alexander) Bowers and brothers Howard and Robert Alexander and Orville Hoos.   All of his siblings are now deceased.   He had many nieces and nephews, some of whom survive to welcome him home to his final resting place.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held at Greenmound Cemetery, New Madison, Ohio, on June 29, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.  Tribute Funeral Home will handle the services. Online condolences may be offered at www.tributefuneralhomes.com.
