James A. Shafer

January 21, 1936 — December 6, 2025

James A. Shafer, age 89, of Greenville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Everheart Care Center, Greenville.

Born on January 21, 1936, in Eaton, Ohio, James was the son of the late Willard and Margaret (Kiracofe) Shafer. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Duane Shafer.

James's memory will be treasured by his devoted wife of 69 years, Janet Shafer; his dear friend, Joy Kemmerer; his niece and nephews, Crystal Lynn Shafer, Justin Allen Shafer, and Kevin Douglas Shafer; along with many extended family members and countless friends whose lives he touched.

James dedicated 20 years of service as the school treasurer for the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District, where he was respected for his integrity, kindness, and steady presence. A lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, James lived his faith through service and song. After high school, he joined the Brethren Volunteer Service, and throughout his life he sang joyfully in the church choir and in a men's quartet. His love for music began early-he proudly played trombone in his high school marching band.

James never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel seen and valued, remembering every name and story shared with him. His curiosity and enthusiasm were contagious. Whether he was sharing a new discovery, fixing something that needed tinkering, or exploring the latest computer technology, he poured his heart into learning and helping others. Above all, he was a loving husband and a gentle, generous soul who brightened the lives of everyone he met.

A celebration of James's life will be held at a later date.
