Maria “Toni” Brock passed away at the age of 95 on Friday September 4th. She was the co-owner of Brocks Restaurant in Greenville and also worked at CW Molding, Westinghouse and GTI until her retirement at age 72.
She is preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Brock in 2000. Also passed away are her parents Pedro and Lusina Esparza (Medina) and her 6 brothers and sisters: Joe Espara, Mike Esparza, Tommy Esparza, Margarita Zuniga, Josephine Macias and Lucy Espaza. Her husband and brothers all served with honor during WW2.
She is survived by her four children; Charlette Sink of Covington, Jimmy Brock of Greenville, Mike Brock of Lubbock Texas, John Brock of Northville Michigan and her granddaughter Nadine Brock of Big Sky Montana.
Toni was born in the West Texas town of Happy Texas in 1931 during the height of the Dust Bowel during the Great Depression. Her younger sister Lucy died of complications of the dust at a young age. Her family lived in a box car next to the railroad until she was 14, as her father was a workman for the railroad. She was the first person of Mexican descent to graduate from the segregated Friendship High School near Lubbock Texas in 1949.
She moved to Darke County in 1964 with her husband and children, following other family members who were among the first Mexican family to permanently move to Darke County. She raised her children and maintained continuous employment throughout her adult life. She was know and well liked by numerous friends and co-workers throughout the years, sadly many who have already departed.
