Michael "Mike" Elwood Gray

Michael “Mike” Elwood Gray, 72, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, at his wife’s side.

Born on January 29, 1954 in Greenville, Ohio, Mike dedicated his life to his family and the education systems he served. He spent more than 45 years in education, inspiring generations of children, coaches and educators with his quiet, but strong leadership. Mike also volunteered for over 40 years with the Special Olympics. Mike did not meet a face he did not know.

Mike was happiest on a court, field, or course watching kids and grandkids compete. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his wife on their farmland, attending harness races, and family gatherings. Mike was known for his huge smile, thoughtful advice, and constant jokes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl “Bud” Gray.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diane Moore Gray; his children, Erin (Matt) Buttermore, Kip (Mallory) Gray, and Haley (Cord) Sandberg; seven grandchildren, Colten, Weston, Whitley, Ansley, Grayton, William and Scottie; his mother, Sara O’Dell Gray; his brothers Dave (Susan) Gray and Ned (Cheryl) Gray; and his sisters Becky (Niles) Swank and Brenda (Harry) Kaufman.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mike's visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 8 at Arcanum Faith United Methodist Church.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Arcanum Faith United Methodist Church with Pastor Justin Wiegand of Community of Faith Church officiating.

Mike's greatest legacy was the way he made all those he encountered feel so deeply known. His absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled, but also comfort and peace that he is fully healed with his Creator.
