Thomas Allen Bruner, age 77, of New Madison, passed away on September 2, 2026, surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 11, 1949, in Darke County, to the late Charles Lloyd and Elizabeth Lucille (Ary) Bruner.

In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Shaffer; siblings, Phyllis (Danny) Patrick, Judy (Max) Sharp, Michael (Robin) Bruner, and Charles L. Bruner, Jr.; brother-in-law, Steve Rhoades; his nephew, Steven J. Bruner; and his sons-in-law, Jason Hale and Chase Spencer.

Tom will be missed by his wife, Shirley (Rhoades) Bruner, who he married on August 8, 1969; his daughter, Rebecca "Beck" Spencer; his grandchildren, Remington (Caiti) Hileman, Gage (Bree) Hileman, Jacob (Makenzie) Shaffer; Jason Hale II, Kasen Hale, and Annabeck Spencer; great grandchildren, Hudson Thomas Hileman; son in law, J. D. Shaffer; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Glenna Bruner; his sister-in-law, Marilyn Bruner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He was a true outdoorsman who found great joy in hunting and spending time in nature. He especially cherished his hunting dogs, taking great pride in training them and watching them become skilled companions in the field. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and per Tom "doing man things." He also had a passion for garage sales and had a special appreciation for collecting antiques, always finding something interesting to bring home.

Tom had a passion for coaching and dedicated many years to coaching both softball and baseball. He especially cherished being there to cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus.

A military service will be held at 7:00 PM following the visitation at the funeral home.
